About the Show

Ukiyo (浮世): Fleeting Life

In Edo-period Japan, amid natural disasters and famine, a positive culture emerged from the street among ordinary people. As the world was harsh and transient, they chose to fully enjoy and celebrate the present moment. During the Edo period, the “Ukiyo” also became a stage for what we would now call pop culture, centered on fashion, trends, and entertainment. Popular culture of the time, especially Ukiyo-e prints, reflected the spirit of common people who embraced the beauty and immediacy of the present despite the difficulties of daily life.

Through the culture of “Ukiyo”, we see the energy of ordinary people living strongly in their everyday lives while finding joy in the present. This collection was created as a respect to that movement—the origin of pop culture that emerged more than 200 years ago. In this collection, I sought to merge inspiration drawn from the pop culture of the Edo period with influences from modern street art. Traditional patterns from Edo-period and elements of spray paint found in contemporary street art. The fusion of natural organic color palette and modern urban neon colors. Japanese aesthetic sensibilities such as asymmetry and imperfection, with the sense of beauty found within the chaos of the modern city. And the search for motifs that connect the Edo period with the present day.

Through these artistic experiments, the works rediscover the enduring energy and strength of people living within street culture, linking the past to the present. They also reaffirm that pop culture and street culture, in every era, are shaped by people who live powerfully in the streets while finding joy in each moment of everyday life.
